The role of aluminum sulfate in the sizing of paperboard surfaces

The performance of surface sizing agents during the sizing process is affected by various environmental factors. For example, the pH of the system, conductivity, temperature, as well as the sizing method of the paper machine and the drying process, all have an impact on the sizing effect of surface sizing agents. For instance, when the temperature of the coating system is too high, it can lead to severe hydrolysis of AKD-type surface sizing agents, resulting in an increased product usage; when the content of impurity ions in the coating system is too high, it can easily lead to the flocculation of polymer-type surface sizing agents, making normal sizing impossible; when the drying temperature of the paper machine is insufficient, it can cause the surface sizing agent to not spread completely on the paper surface, leading to poor sizing effects or excessively long curing times.

Therefore, only by fully understanding the influencing factors of various types of surface sizing agents can we better apply and adjust surface sizing agents in the actual production process. As one of the commonly used sizing agents in the sizing process of board paper, styrene-acrylic surface sizing agents often need to be used in conjunction with aluminum sulfate during the sizing process, which helps to improve the sizing effect. The following figure shows the trend of the effect of varying amounts of aluminum sulfate on the sizing performance of styrene-acrylic surface sizing agents in an enzyme-modified starch and ammonium persulfate (APS) modified starch system (the absolute dry addition amount of the surface sizing agent to the system is 0.1%).
